A J-turn is a way to turn a car around when travelling at speed in reverse, the ‘J’ comes from the tracks the car makes whilst do this man.It is used by police and bodyguard drivers to escape road blocks or ambush situations and is often seen in high action Hollywood action movies. A J-turn should only be attempted in a family saloon car, as a vehicle such as a off road 4x4 car or commercial vehicle is likely to overturn… so be warned. To execute a J-turn, it is best done in wet conditions and in a huge area to practice in as the car can spin off in the wrong direction quite easily. To attempt the J-turn reverse at speed usually the maximum revs in reverse gear, have your hand at the 12 o’clock position, then lift off the throttle, whilst simultaneously throwing the steering wheel to the right ending at the 6 o’clock position. Depending on the vehicle, the front end should skid and end up in line with direction of travel you we doing in reverse (180˚ turn) this is achieved by the weight of the engine wanting to carry on in a straight line. With some vehicles, particularly smaller ones when the car has skidded to 90˚ you will need to slam your foot on the brake to complete the spin. Also in all cases as the car is spinning you will need to depress and move gears from reverse to 2nd, then release when pointing in direction wanted and drive away. |
